What a worker is

A worker processes one image at a time. It reads the original from your storage and applies the operations in the URL. Then it saves the result to the cache.

Focal serves every later request for that image from the cache. Those requests use no worker, however many visitors make them.

How to choose a tier

  1. 01 Find your busiest moment for new images, for example a catalogue launch or a sale going live.
  2. 02 Estimate how many uncached images visitors request at the same moment then.
  3. 03 Pick the tier at or above that number. If you are unsure, start the free trial on 8 workers.
  4. 04 If new images arrive slowly at peak times, move up a tier in the billing portal.

What is a worker?
A worker processes one image. It reads the original from your storage, applies the operations in the URL and saves the result to the cache. Your tier sets how many images Focal processes at the same time for your account. An image served from the cache does not use a worker.
How many workers do I need?
Count the new, uncached images your visitors request at the same moment at your busiest time, for example when you publish a new catalogue. Most requests are served from the cache and use no worker. If you are unsure, start the trial on 8 workers. If new images arrive slowly at peak times, move to the next tier.
What does fair use mean for bandwidth?
Every tier includes bandwidth with no monthly allowance and no overage charge. Fair use means you deliver images to the visitors of your own sites and apps. It excludes using Focal as a general file host, for example to serve downloads, video or other files that are not images. If an account falls outside fair use, we contact you to agree a plan that fits.
How does the free trial work?
The 8-worker tier comes with a 14-day free trial. You add a card at checkout. Our payment provider, Dodo Payments, charges that card $449 for the first month when the trial ends, unless you cancel before then. Each account gets one trial, on its first subscription. The larger tiers have no trial, so billing starts at checkout.
How do I cancel?
Open the billing portal from your dashboard and cancel there. If you cancel during the trial, we do not charge your card. After the trial, your plan runs to the end of the month you paid for and then stops. Your originals never left your storage, so there is nothing to move back.
Can I change the number of workers?
Yes. Choose a new tier in the billing portal on your dashboard, and Dodo Payments adjusts your bill for the change. A change during the trial ends the trial. Billing then starts at the new tier. For more than 96 workers, write to contact@focaltool.com.
